Brinjal Gothsu (popularly know as chidambaram kathirikai gotsu) is a nice dish that goes well with idli/dosa and pongal items. I learnt this from my mom, she used it make this dish often bcecause this is my father’s favourite . This gothsu has some unique taste and flavour because of freshly grounded powder and small onions. Am going to share this recipe with you all.
Preparation Time : 10 minutes
Cooking time : 25 minutes
Ingredients:
- Brinjal – 5 to 7 (based on the size)
- Small onion or Shallots – 15
- Tamarind – small lemon size
- Asafoetida – 2 pinch
- Red chillies – 8 (adjust based on the spiciness)
- Coriander seeds – 1 tsp
- Oil – 1 tsp
- Salt – to taste
- Water – as required
To temper:
- Sesame oil – 2 tsp
- Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp
- Split urad dal – 1/2 tsp
- Chana dal – 1/2 tsp
- Curry leaves – a spring
Pre-preparation:
- Soak tamarind in water ans extract juice from it
- Heat a tsp of oil and add chillies, asafoetida and coriander seeds and roast it well till the aroma comes. switch off the flame, cool it and grind it to a powder
Method:
- Cut and wash brinjals and cook it in water for few minutes till it becomes soft. Remove it and cool down
- Grind brinjal into a coarse paste in a mixie
- Heat 2 tsp of gingelly oil in a pan and add items to temper
- Add finely chopped small onions and saute well
- Add brinjal and tamarind extract and enough water , salt to it
- Close it with lid and cook for 5 minutes in medium flame
- Open the lid and add Ground masala powder and cook it well
- Wait till it reaches the thick consistency
- Switch off the flame and garnish it with chopped coriander leaves
- Serve it with your favourite tiffin item
