Coconut Chutney

Coconut chutney is a easy and common sidish for most of the tiffin items in south india. We can pair this chutney with idli, dosa, upma, kichadi and vadai. My paatee never failed to add small onions while tempering the chutney. Tasty one and Easy to make within 15 minutes

Ingredients:

  1. Grated Coconut – 1 cup (grated one half of the coconut)
  2. Fried Gram – 3 tsp
  3. Green chillies – 3
  4. Ginger – 1/2 inch
  5. Salt – to taste

To temper:

  1. oil – 1 tsp
  2. Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp
  3. Split urad dal – 1/2 tsp
  4. Asafoetida/hing – a pinch
  5. Small onions – 5 nos (finely chopped)
  6. Curry leaves – a spring

Method:

  1. Take Coconut, fried gram, green chillies and chopped ginger to a mixie jar
  2. Add salt and grind it well by adding water
  3. Transfer it to the bowl
  4. Heat a tadka and add oil
  5. Add items to temper
  6. Finally add onions and saute well
  7. Transfer it to the chutney bowl and serve it with your favourite tiffin item

Tips:

  1. You can skip adding small onions while tempering
  2. You can replace ginger with one garlic pod
  3. you can skip adding fried gram too.
  4. You can add water to the chutney after grinding and add the chutney to the tadka and boil for few minutes. Chutney becomes watery and tastes different. This form is is ideal for soft idlis and dosa
