Tiffin Sambar

This recipe is perfect to go with all tiffin items like Idly, Dosa, Pongal, Vada and Upma. My Father in law likes this sambar much with hot idlis. I make this often as my son likes to eat idli/dosa with sambar.

Cooking time : 25 mins

Serves: 4

Ingredients:

  1. Moong dal – 1 cup
  2. Small onions – 15 or Big onion – 1( small onions enhance the taste)
  3. Big tomato – 1
  4. Green chilli – 2
  5. Carrot(small) -1
  6. Potato – 1
  7. Brinjal – 1
  8. Tiffin Sambar Powder – 1 tsp
  9. Turmeric Powder – 1/4 tsp
  10. oil – 2 tsp
  11. salt – required
  12. chopped coriander leaves – 2 tsp

To Temper:

  1. Mustard – 3/4 tsp
  2. Jeera/Cumin – 1 tsp
  3. Fenugreek seeds – 1/4 tsp
  4. Curry leaves – 1 spring
  5. Asafoetida – 1/4 tsp

Method:

  1. Wash and pressure cook Moong dal for 3 whistle in a pressure cooker. wait till the pressure release by itself
  2. In the mean time, slice the onions, tomatoes ,slit the green chillies and cut all vegetables in medium size
  3. open the cooker and mash the cooked dal well
  4. heat oil in a pan , add items to temper and sliced onions saute well, then add tomatoes and all vegetables
  5. Add salt , turmeric, tamarind extract and add enough water for the vegetables to cook.
  6. close the lid and cook the vegetables for 5-7 minutes in a medium flame
  7. once the vegetables cooked, add 1 tsp of sambar powder and add mashed dal to it . Adjust the consistency by adding water and cook for 5 minutes in medium flame( stir occasionally otherwise moong dal will stick in the bottom)
  8. Finally add the coriander leaves
  9. Serve this sambar with your favourite tiffin item

Tips:

  1. you can use ghee instead of oil while tempering

2. Normal sambar powder can also be used instead of tiffin sambar powder but taste will be different

3. you can use veggies of your choice
