Black Glutinous rice Porridge/ Kavuni Arisi Kanji

Black Glutinous rice is also known as Black rice, kavuni arisi , karuppu arisi . Eventhough the rice is black in color , the color becomes Burgundy after cooking it. It has lot of health benefits. Try to include this rice in your food whenever possible. In our home, we make Porridge, Pongal and dessert. I will share the recipes with you all. Try this recipe and everyone will like it for sure!

Preparation Time : 10 minutes

Cooking Time : 15 minutes

Serves : 2

Ingredients:

  1. Black Glutinous Rice – 1/2 cup (100g)
  2. Water – 2 to 3 cups
  3. Milk – 1 cup
  4. Grated coconut – 4 tsp
  5. Jaggery – 1/4 cup

Pre-preparation:

Dry roast the Black Glutinous Rice in medium flame for 3-5 minutes till the aroma come. switch off the flame and grind it to a fine powder in a mixie. [Note: Rice is clean, so i just dry roasted and used it. If it contains dust, wash the rice well and drain it for few minutes and then dry roast it]

Method:

  1. Heat a thick bottomed pan in stove
  2. Add the rice powder and 2 cups of water
  3. Mix it well to avoid lumps and keep it in medium flame. Rice will absorb water, so add water if necessary and cook for 15 minutes. Add water to adjust the consistency
  4. Cool it down and add coconut, jaggery and milk and serve it as breakfast

Variations:

  1. If you dont want sweet, then add salt , buttermilk to it. It too tastes good. Add small onions, green chillies for the spiciness
  2. You can replace milk with coconut milk for sweet version, that too tastes good
