Raw Plantain Fry/Vazhakkai Varuval

Vazhakkai varuval is a traditional dish cooked in most of the south-indian kitchen. This quick recipe would a good sidish for rice items (like coconut rice, lemon rice)and kuzhambu.


  1. Big Raw Banana -1
  2. Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
  3. Chilli powder – 3/4 tsp
  4. salt – to taste
  5. oil – 5 tsp


  1. Peel the skin of raw banana and cut into slices
  2. Put the slices in water containing salt, it prevents the blackening


  1. Heat a pan with 1 cup of water and add sliced bananas
  2. cook it for 3 minutes in medium flame , it results in half cooked raw banana
  3. Drain the water and take the raw banana pieces
  4. Marinate it with salt, turmeric powder ,chilli powder and rice flour.let it sit for atleast 5 minutes
  5. Heat 2 tsp oil in pan and add few pieces to it
  6. cook it in medium flame and flip it to other side once it is cooked
  7. cook the other side too and drain it
  8. Repeat the steps 5-7 for remaining slices
