Pongal is one of the popular and famous breakfast of Tamil Nadu . It is a very simple recipe which can be done in a jiffy. Pongal is served with coconut chutney or sambar with vadai as an accompaniment. This Year Pongal falls on 15th January. I already posted sakkarai pongal /sweet pongal recipe, so I am going to share ven pongal recipe here and Advance Pongal wishes ti you all.
Preparation time : 10 minutes
Cooking time : 20 minutes
Serves : 3
Ingredients:
- Raw rice – 1 cup
- Split moong dal/ pasi paruppu – 1/2 cup
- Ginger – 1 tsp finely chopped
- Asafoetida – a pinch
- water – 4 cups
- salt – to taste
Seasoning:
- Ghee – 4 tsp
- Peppercorns/Milagu – 2 tsp
- Cumin seeds/jeera – 2 tsp
- Curry leaves – 1 spring
- Cashews – 10 nos
Method:
- Dry roast moong dal till nice aroma comes. Dont burn it (This step is optional)
- Wash rice and dal well
- Transfer it to pressure cooker and add water, salt, ginger and asafoetida
- Pressure cook for 4 whistles in medium flame
- Switch off the flame
- Wait till the pressure get released by itself . open the cooker
- Mash the rice dal mixture well
- Take a frying pan and add ghee, then add pepper and jeera( u can add slightly crushed pepper too), curry leaves and cashews
- Fry it well and add it to Pongal , mix well
- Serve it with sambar or chutney. I served it with sambar
